Americans have historically been reluctant to go to war. When we do, we are generally pretty good at it. In the last century, after electing Woodrow Wilson who promised to keep us out of the European war, we joined our traditional allies, England and France, to stop the Germans. We did it again about twenty years later, but only after a sneak attack by Japan ignited our righteous anger, plunging us into the existing war in Europe and, for us, the new one in the Pacific.

Irvine, CA--In his January 10 speech, President Bush acknowledged that Iran is providing key material support for attacks on American troops in Iraq.

It’s quite obvious that President Bush, and no one in his administration, knows how to end the war in Iraq. Bush doesn’t even know how to start a war: he bungled it from beginning. It took the war-obsessed neocons to show Bush how to start this war, and now we discover that not even the war-hungry neocons know how to stop it once it’s started.

Dubious historical accounts tell us that Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto believed his plan to attack the American Naval fleet at Pearl Harbor had simply “awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.” It is one of those statements that, if it was not actually uttered, it should have been.

Unfortunately, many in the GOP and many “movement conservatives” have been neoconned in the area of foreign policy.

Nobody ever thought this would happen. Americans actually siding with terrorists to get the story? Can America be that separated in opinion where a portion is actually hoping that the enemy actually ‘wins’ a war, that the killing of American troops proves a point, and that America should never be involved in a particular conflict? You bet. And it’s unfolding before us on our TV screens.

As Americans remember the horror of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington more than five years ago, the US borders are practically as porous as ever. Yet Americans get few answers during the heated debate. What many hear are abstractions about tightening border security with no mention of how that is to be achieved.
