Last week’s column about the coming shift to tax-by-the-mile devices in automobiles brought many interesting letters. One writer says he was working on this project way back in the 1980s when he was building special Buicks that would run on methanol for the Department of Energy, with on-board computers to control the car’s operation. By 1993, test cars in Colorado were controlled from Pontiac, Mich. The popular “OnStar” system, promoted by Government Motors, is an outgrowth of this work. 

As I have posted over the years, the Founders of this country defeated abuse of process as much as they defeated an army and a single person as the Sovereign. They learned from misery and tyranny what NOT to do. One thing was within their power, and that was to make certain things absolute. All they need do was declare it at the nation’s inception, and they did; It rests in the words of art shall not be infringed. How’s that for Original intent?

Washington, D.C., April 28, 2009--Today the Supreme Court ruled in FCC v. Fox that the FCC can continue to fine broadcasters for “fleeting expletives.”

The Laredo VISTA experience taught my wife and me a lot about government, particularly government programs ostensibly meant to “empower” people.

There is only one way to save this great nation: by returning to the principles of freedom set forth in the U.S. Constitution. This week, hundreds of thousands of people expressed their frustration with government-gone-wild by gathering in more than 300 cities across the nation in modern-day tea parties. That is T.E.A. – as in Taxed Enough Already – parties. The common theme among all these people is: “We’ve had enough of big government!”

A public-interest legal group says it has been notified that the U.S. government – which watched the disintegration of its case against a Marine accused by Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., of murder in Haditha, Iraq – is refusing to give up.

One cannot doubt the unrest seen in the US now. Obama won the presidential election by 54-46, but that 46% is almost half the country. The ‘us versus them’ mindset has taken over. When one hears words like “secede”, “rebellion”, and “revolution”, things get scary. 

Alright all you right-wing thugs out there, now that tax day is over, Obama and his pals are saying you are dangerous and that your tax protests are an act of revolution. It is amusing that they’ve never said that with the many riots past and present spread by left-wingers in the US—after all little “right-wing” violence has ever been seen here—but there you have it. It’s all YOU. Not the Animal Rights activists that constantly engage in assault, not the rock throwers of anti-WTO protests, not ACORN and union thugs, and not the Envro Nazis that have engaged in actual terrorism all across the country. YOU are the threat we’ve been waiting for.

Yesterday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry issued a statement in support of a state resolution supporting states’ rights under the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Perry stated. “I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our union.”

Democracy and majority rule give an aura of legitimacy to acts that would otherwise be deemed tyranny. Think about it. How many decisions in our day-to-day lives would we like to be made through majority rule or the democratic process? How about the decision whether you should watch a football game on television or “Law and Order”? What about whether you drive a Chevrolet or a Ford, or whether your Easter dinner is turkey or ham? Were such decisions made in the political arena, most of us would deem it tyranny. Why isn’t it also tyranny for the democratic process to mandate what type of light bulbs we use, how many gallons of water to flush toilets or whether money should be taken out of our paycheck for retirement? 

Self-proclaimed “conservatives” love to tout themselves as ardent supporters of the “free enterprise” system. In the name of “capitalism,” they support any and every piece of legislation or governmental decision that caters to business--especially Big Business. Favorite policies of these folks include anything and everything that calls itself “free trade.” Furthermore, these same “conservatives” will support just about anything and everything that is said to advance the so-called “global economy.”

Google is one of the bastions of high tech here in the Silicon Valley, beloved by investors, used by nearly everyone and adored by governments and corporations alike for its data collecting on users.  However, Google is getting some stiff resistance from one set of users not known for causing a fuss: the British public. 

Prospects for the U.S. Auto Industry - The ouster of General Motors CEO Rick Wagnoner by the Obama administration isn’t the first time in recent history that the government has forced out a CEO. That first happened in September when Bush administration Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson forced out American International Group CEO Robert Willumstad in favor of Paulson’s friend Edward Liddy.

If you have a mortgage, the US government most probably already owns your house.  If your vehicle is financed or leased most probably the US government already owns it.
