Immigration is a difficult issue for conservatives these days. It is fraught with emotions and passionate feelings. Worse, whenever someone tries to discuss the issue dispassionately, the old canard of “no true Scotsman” is employed against them. But conservatives need to continue to have this discussion and get their ducks in a row on the issue because the other side has a successful call to arms that we need to prove wrong. It is too easy for the left to claim that it has “compassion” for immigrants and we don’t. We need to pull the debate away from faux “compassion” and toward the facts.

Problems with the 1986 IRCA Legalization Program - WASHINGTON (January 5, 2010) – The Obama Administration and Democrats in Congress have announced they will try to pass an amnesty for illegal aliens this year. Only the House version of their bill has so far been introduced: H.R. 4321. The Senate companion bill will be sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer, who, while in the House, was a key player in passing the last big amnesty, the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA).

With most Americans dreaming of a few days respite from their work or praying for some way to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads, much less provide for Christmas, you would think that D.C. lawmakers would give us all a break and go home.

They tell us there are 12 million illegals living in the United States of America.  12 million! (I don’t believe, for a second, there are ONLY 12 million illegal aliens in America!) But, for the sake of this commentary, let us accept, for the moment, that figure is true.  That means the southern border of the US has been violated, crossed illegally, 12 million times, that we know of, and it MUST STOP!

On Aug. 16, The New York Times ran an angry editorial entitled, “Water in the desert.” It referred to a man named Walt Staton, who placed water jugs in the New Mexican desert along the Mexican border for those seeking to cross the border illegally, some of whom die in the desert from lack of water. Staton was convicted of littering and “sentenced last week to probation and 300 hours of picking up trash after he refused to pay a fine.”

Last week, national security news began on Monday at the North American Summit where President Obama met Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Guadalajara, Mexico. Much of the get together was “happy talk” with positive words on issues of mutual concern from dealing with a return of the Swine Flu (H1N1 virus) this autumn to the ongoing was against the cartels menacing both sides of the US-Mexico border. Obama, however, badly stumbled when he took on the issue of immigration reform.

In the midst of the debate over state-run health care comes news that blames the steady influx of immigrants for a rise in Medicare fraud.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials ordered a Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff to release dozens of illegal immigrants arrested during a recent sweep.

It is time now to search out all the Latino conservatives and get them trained to go into the Latino communities to rally support using the message or something similar if they continue to support Democrats they will have not bettered life for themselves and their families in the long run.  For example, just in Texas Latinos is now the dominant race of people.  The latest figures I have seen which was just a week or so ago revealed Latinos 40%, Whites 34% and blacks 30%. They must be made to realize that as U.S. citizens their livelihoods and freedoms are as much at stake as anyone else so they must reject LaRaza’s demand for Open Borders in order to protect and secure their family’s future hopes and aspirations. We must fight fire with fire and be honest with the people in these communities. The more pressure being brought to bear by LaRaza and other Latino organizations by demanding increased immigration is a threat to these same hopes and aspirations. I am not saying it must be done as I have stated here but in a way more informed sources than me know as far as reaching this voter and with the message that will resonate best. They must be told Democratic policies are leading to the same type of oppression they sought refuge from.  The message must be all about freedom of choice to be whatever you want to be instead of what government demands you are.  They can understand this.  It is a fact of life Latinos are here to stay, especially under the current Democratic leadership in government and refusal to accept this fact is done so at our conservative peril.

Under the Visa Waiver Program, citizens from 27 countries can travel to the United States visa free. Terrorism concerns involving VWP country citizens have led some to suggest eliminating or suspending the program, while the executive branch is considering adding countries to it.
