The Ayn Rand Institute is releasing this 1993 speech on the Clinton Health Plan--originally delivered at a Town Hall meeting in Costa Mesa, California--because the same essential issues underlie today’s debate over universal health coverage. While current proposals, such as Governor Schwarzenegger’s, differ in their details from the Clinton plan, they share with Clinton’s proposal a fundamental moral premise: the notion of a right to health care. It is this moral premise that must be rejected if the problems with America’s health care system are ever to be solved.

Unfortunately, many in the GOP and many “movement conservatives” have been neoconned in the area of foreign policy.

Nobody ever thought this would happen. Americans actually siding with terrorists to get the story? Can America be that separated in opinion where a portion is actually hoping that the enemy actually ‘wins’ a war, that the killing of American troops proves a point, and that America should never be involved in a particular conflict? You bet. And it’s unfolding before us on our TV screens.

A few years ago Democratic pollster Celinda Lake sounded the alarm that the Dems needed to reach out to male voters, or else resign itself to becoming a party of the perpetual minority. At first everyone laughed her off.

As Americans remember the horror of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington more than five years ago, the US borders are practically as porous as ever. Yet Americans get few answers during the heated debate. What many hear are abstractions about tightening border security with no mention of how that is to be achieved.

Whatever their views of President Bush’s new “surge” of 20,000 soldiers, both liberals and conservatives continue to claim that they support our troops. Liberals say they support our troops by criticizing or opposing “Operation Iraqi Freedom,” which they claim has unnecessarily killed 3,000 soldiers. Conservatives say they support our troops by supporting the mission that most of our troops believe in.

President George Bush addressed the nation last week with the face of a beaten man staring into the camera with forlorn eyes. He tilted off-balance like a pinball machine jammed one too many times. Bush’s childhood provides reasons for his irrational actions. Allow me to explain.

Memphis, Tennessee: Media reform sounds like a good cause. But the gathering here of more than 2,000 activists turned out to be an effort to push the Democratic Party further to the left and get more “progressive” voices in the media, while proposing to use the power of the federal government to silence conservatives. 

In a few weeks, there will be almost 200,000 battle-hardened, elite, American troops in Iraq-each and every one trained in counter-insurgency operations.  They will be supported by almost 50,000 US Navy and Air Force personnel stationed in the Persian Gulf, and ready to bring 300-500 American combat aircraft into action at a moment’s notice.  In addition to this overwhelming combat power, the Iraqi Security Forces can field between 350-450,000 people ranging in capability from desert border patrol forces to extremely experienced and battle-proven counter-insurgency special forces.  Other Coalition forces in Iraq add to the 700,000 with yet tens of thousands more troops.

You know the routine.  Lump all the negative influences in your life together, and then, without bothering to analyze them too critically, throw them all out, because you deem them “detrimental to your well-being.” As many may well be.
