The Unfairness of the “Fairness Doctrine”In an effort to quash the free speech rights of wildly popular conservative radio broadcasters, four Democrats are attempting to revive the “Fairness in Broadcasting Act of 1993” (also known as the Fairness Doctrine). Conservative broadcasters, who have considerable influence over their large conservative audience, are some of the few in the media you can turn to if you want to hear opinions in support of our national security policies. Some Democrats don’t like this.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representatives Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, Maurice Hinchey and Louise Slaughter, both of New York, are behind this recent interest in the Fairness Doctrine, which was overturned by the FCC in 1987. It would require all broadcasters to provide “reasonable opportunity for the discussion of conflicting views of public importance.” Citing the need for “diversity of opinion” in broadcasting, these four Democrats feel the need for the Fairness Doctrine. Apparently, they won’t be happy unless they have total liberal viewpoint control of all medium, not just television and print media. Article
